SINGAPORE, April 26 (Bernama) -- For the first time in the history of
the SEA Games, the flag raising ceremony, which is usually held at the
Athletes' Village, will take place at the Sports Hub as the main venue
for the games in Singapore.
Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee (SINGSOC) Accommodation Head Michelle Liong said that the ceremony would be held over two days, where four participating countries would carry out the rites in 45 minutes respectively.
Singapore, as the host, is the first to break with tradition not to have a games village during the biennial event as the organising committee decided to place all the athletes and officials in hotels around the city.
The different approach would also see more than 7,000 athletes and officials splitting into 20 hotels, according to their participation events.
Michelle said the consideration of using hotels was to ensure all the athletes and officials had a positive experience in Singapore.
"They (athletes and officials) will be housed in conducive and comfortable environment so that they can focus on their game preparation and performances.
"The hotels chosen are very close to the competition venues, easy access to public transport and are also close to the places of interest," she said, ensuring that athletes will reach the competition venues on time without traffic disruption.
In terms of security in the hotels as well as the competition venues, Michelle said that SINGSOC was working very closely with the Singapore Police Force in order to ensure that the security level of each hotel and venue was tight.
She noted that SINGSOC was also concerned about the food and beverage served to the athletes during the 12-day Games and informed that the contingents were not allowed to bring their own chef.
