PETALING JAYA: Australian-born Malaysian defender
Matthew Davies been called up by national Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee
for the Singapore SEA Games.
The 20-year-old new Pahang signing from A-League side Perth Glory is among 30 players called up for a four-day trial at the Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya beginning on Sunday.
Kim Swee said that Davies and the other trainees will be put to test during the four-day trial, which will include a warm-up match against Selangor League side MK Land.
“I was hoping to see Davies make his debut with Pahang in Kota Baru this weekend. But I was told that Davies is not ready for action, yet. But I’m prepared to give him a try-out,” said Kim Swee.
“Imagine a 20-year-old playing in the A-League and having more than
19 caps with a top club side like Perth Glory. To be fair to the rest of
the trainees, everyone will get a fair trial before I name the final 20
for the SEA Games.”
Kim Swee had 60 players in the provisional list but has narrowed it down to 30 after the playing tour of Bangkok last month.
“I don’t have much time to work with the players because the final phase of training will be in early May,” said Kim Swee.
The SEA Games football competition is expected to kick off on May 28. The draw for the Under-23 football competition will be conducted in Singapore next week.
Kim Swee also said that he is eager to look at Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) midfielder Gary Steven Robbat, who has just served out a three-month ban.
“Gary will be joining the four-day trial although the rest of the JDT players are exempted because of their commitment in the AFC Cup competition. Gary is not registered for the AFC Cup so he will be in training,” said Kim Swee.
The JDT players exempted from attending the trials are Mohd Amer Saidin and Fandi Othman.
