Khairy Hopes Cost Of Organising 2017 SEA Games Below RM80 Million

NAYPYITAW, Dec 12 (Bernama) - Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin hopes that the cost of organising 2017 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia does not reach RM80 million.

"Although the Cabinet has approved this amount, we want to reduce the cost. We will use facilities at Bukit Jalil and improve other facilities but will ensure it does not affect standards.

"The amount mentioned is just the estimated cost, not the actual cost," he told reporters after calling on the Malaysian contingent at the SEA Games Village, here Thursday.

Also present were Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar and National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong.

Khairy did not rule out the possibility that several sports would be held outside the Klang Valley, including Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Johor.

"Kuala Lumpur is still the main venue for the 2017 SEA Games. We do not want to have too many venues as it will troublesome (for the organiser)."

He was confident that the Malaysian contingent would achieve the target of 40 gold medals although several major sports have failed to meet expectations.

The ministry would make a post-mortem on the failure of the sports before determining the amount of annual allocation to the national sports associations.

Earlier, Khairy saw Malaysian athletes in action by watching events such as badminton and sepak takraw held at Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium.
