The Malaysian carded an improved even-par 72 to sit in eighth spot on two-over 146 – and remain on course to win a medal.
He is just three shots adrift co-leaders Marc Ong of Singapore and Natipong Srithong of Thailand at the halfway stage of the SEA Games golf competition at Sentosa Golf Club on Wednesday.
Marc and Natipong both shot a poorer 73 compared to their opening 70 on Tuesday, but it was still good enough for them to top the leaderboard. Overnight leader, Tawan Phongphun of Thailand blew up with a 75 to drop to joint third on 144.
Amir Nazrin Jailani, who was the best-placed Malaysian alongside Galven in the first round, fell further after posting a three-over 75 to tie for 12th.
Two other Malaysians, Bryan Teoh Wiyang (75) and Daeng Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz (75), are virtually out of contention. They are placed tied 17th and 21st.
For the team event, Malaysia remained fourth with a two-day total of 447, three strokes off third spot occupied by the Philippines.
Thailand (426), powered by three members of their 2014 Incheon Asian Games bronze winning team, are on course to retain their title two years ago. They have a six-shot cushion over second-placed Singapore.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian women's team also did not get the start they wanted.
Nur Durriyah Damian (76), Genevieve Ling (76) and Loy Hee Ying (75) could only manage an opening total of 151. They sit in fourth, eight shots behind leaders Indonesia.
