KUALA LUMPUR: There was no golden finish for Malaysia on the final day of the Singapore Open Athletics Championships.
The only consolation on Sunday came from Nor Amelia Musa’s silver in the women’s 800m with a time of 2:18.95 and a bronze in the men’s 200m from Mohd Izzuddin Yahaya, who clocked 21.41 at the Singapore Sports Hub.
It was Nor Amelia’s second medal in the championships after winning gold in the 1,500m on Saturday. The 800m gold went to Hong Kong’s Chua Yan Ching (2:18.75) while Singapore’s Nicole Ann Isabella (2:22.44) collected the bronze.
School teacher Mohd Izzuddin, who finished fourth in the 100m final (10.57) on Saturday, was just 0.01 seconds slower than his 200m personal best of 21.40, which he did en-route to the gold medal at the Malaysian Open last week.
Taiwan made it a 1-2 finish with Yang Jun-hun taking the gold in 20.96 and Wang Wen-tang the silver in 21.30.
Mohd Izzuddin was delighted to bag his first medal in an overseas meet.
“The Singapore Open is was my first international meet. The bronze medal will be a good boost ahead of my preparations for the Singapore SEA Games in June,” said Izzuddin.
SEA Games silver medallist Iskandar Alwi was a let down in the men's pole vault.
The Johor-born athlete, who rewrote his national record with a height of 5.16m en-route to the gold medal in the Malaysian Open, could only manage 4.60m to finish eighth out of nine participants.
Malaysia managed a four gold, five silver and two bronze medal haul in the two-day meet.
