KUALA LUMPUR: Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian upstaged
favourite and 2011 Palembang SEA Games gold medallist Jamras Rittidet of
Thailand to win the gold medal in the men’s 110m hurdles with a
season’s best time of 13.86 in the Thailand Open athletics championships
at the Thammasat University Sports Complex on Tuesday.
The Sabah-born Rayzam, who bagged the silver in the Palembang SEA Games with 13.86, also qualified for the Myanmar SEA Games in December by equalling the qualifying mark.
Jamras, who won the 2011 SEA Games gold with a time of 13.77, clocked 13.90 to win the silver on Tuesday.
Team manager Mohd Ismail Ibrahim was delighted with Rayzam’s achievement as he not only qualified for the Myanmar SEA Games but also finished ahead of Jamras, who is the top 110m hurdler in the region.
Rayzam, who has a personal best of 13.81, was relieved to finally earn his place in the SEA Games squad after struggling to beat the mark this year.
“I’m also happy that I upstaged Jamras in his own country. This is my best achievement this year.
“I will go all out to win the SEA Games gold in December to prove that my win over Jamras in the Thailand Open was no fluke,” said Rayzam, who won the gold medal in the 2007 Korat SEA Games.
Two other Malaysian athletes also won gold medals in the Thailand Open. Nauraj Sigh, who has qualified for the Myanmar SEA Games, cleared 2.11m to win the men’s high jump event.
Walker Mohd Khairil Harith clocked 1’38:12 to bag the men’s 20km gold. Khairil also has qualified for the SEA Games.
Meanwhile, the second Malaysian Grand Prix, scheduled for this Saturday at Bukit Jalil, has been cancelled at the request of the national coaches.
Malaysian Athletic Federation (MAF) assistant general manager Anthony Samy said they cancelled the event on requests by the national coaches.
“The national athletes are competing in the Thailand Open and will only return on Saturday, so there’s no way they can compete in the meet,” said MAF assistant general manager Anthony Samy.
“The last competition for athletes to qualify for the Myanmar SEA Games is the Malaysian Open in KL from Oct 19-20.”
