PALEMBANG, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- National shooter Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi was on cloud nine on capturing Malaysia's first gold in the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia.
The 29-year-old shot her way to the gold in the women's individual 50m Rifle 3 Positions. The shooting events kicked off at the Jakabaring Sports Complex shooting range here Saturday.
"I never expected to win the gold medal here. I had not even set a medal target for myself this time," she said when approached by Bernama after the feat.
She said the late arrival of the team's bullets did not affect her concentration at all. (The team's bullet stocks were delayed due to some technical glitches because of Indonesia's airline regulations pertaining to firearms).
"That was a management matter. As for me, I just wanted to do my best. I am very honoured to win Malaysia's first gold medal in this SEA Games," added Nur Suryani, who won the gold with partner Nur Ayuni Farhana Abdul Halim in the women's 10 Air Rifle (Pairs) at the Delhi Commonwealth Games last year.
She is now setting her sights on the 10m Air Rifle pairs on Wednesday where she will be partnering Shahera Rahim Raja.
In the women's individual 50m Rifle 3 Positions, Nur Suryani collected 679.8 points to defeat nearest rival Sununta Majhacheep of Thailand who shot 676.3 points.
Her compatriot Nur Ayuni Farhana took the bronze after firing 675.4 points.
Besides the success of Nur Suryani and Nur Ayuni Farhana, the national shooting squad also grabbed two silver medals through Khalel Abdullah in the men's individual 25m Standard Pistol and Mohd Hadafi Jaafar (men's individual 10m Air Rifle).
The medal presentation is scheduled to be held Sunday.
At the Laos Games two years ago, the national shooting squad failed to win any gold medals and only brought home six silver and five bronze.
