SEA GAMES: Men's Badminton Team Contributes Silver

JAKARTA, Nov 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian men's baminton squad had to settle for the silver medal when they lost 1-3 to Indonesia in the final at the ongoing 26th SEA Games in Indonesia Tuesday.

In the final at the Istora Senayan badminton stadium here, Malaysia fielded Liew Darren as the first singles but he lost 20-22, 12-21 to Simon Santoso.

The doubles pair of Lim Khim Wah/Goh Wei Shem kept Malaysia's hopes for the gold alive when they defeated Bona Septano/Ahsan Mohammad 21-18, 15-21, 25-23 but second singles Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif was clearly outclased when he lost to Tommy Sugiarto, 13-21, 17-21.

Indonesia's second doubles pair of Hendra Setiawan/Markis Kido sealed Indonesia's victory when they tamed Malaysia's Mak Hee Chun/Ong Soon Hock 21-10, 21-14.

Lim and Goh said even though the home supporters were vociferous, they were undaunted and kept their fighting spirits high.

"While the opponents were boosted by the partisan crowd, we had our strength in speed and this weapon brought Malaysia's solitary point in the final," said Goh.

Singapore took home the bronze medal.

The last time the Malaysian men won gold in the event was at the Korat SEA Games in Thailand in 2007.
