SEA GAMES: Men's 4x400m Quartet Win Shock Gold Medal

PALEMBANG, Nov 15 (Bernama) - The men's quartet won a shock gold medal for Malaysia in the 4x400m relay final at Palembang Athletic Stadium here Monday night.

S. Kannathasan, P. Vuvaraj, Schzuan Ahmad Rosely and Mohd Yunus La Salleh ran superbly to finish ahead of Philippines and Thailand.

The gold medal was the fourth for Malaysia's athletic squad.

Malaysia began well with Kannathasan and Vuvaraj competing with runners from Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines and Singapore.

Things changed when third runner Schzuan surged about 30m ahead to give the baton to last runner Mohd Yunus who sprinted to the finishing line.

"Its like a dream. I know I have to run as fast as I could," said Mohd Yunus after the race.

Vuvaraj said their participation in the event was a last minute decision as there was no participation from the women athletes.

"We are very happy and just wanted to do a good job. We really did not expect to win tonight," he added.

The Malaysian quartet clocked 3min 10:49sec to win gold with Philippines silver (3min 11.16 sec) and Thailand bronze (3min 14.890sec).
