SEA GAMES: A Silver And Bronze On Last Day Of Karate Event

JAKARTA, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysian karatekas concluded their mission in Indonesia by clinching four gold, two silver and eight bronze medals in the karate event of the ongoing SEA Games in Indonesia.

The national squad today added a silver from Team Kumite (Women) and a bronze from Team Kumite (Men) on the final day of the event held at the Senayan Tennis Indoor Stadium, here.

The women's team, comprising G.Yamini, Jamalliah Jamaludin and A.Nisha, bowed out 0-2 to their nemesis, Indonesia in the final.

Vietnam took the bronze after taming Thailand 1-0 in the repercharge stage and sharing the medal with the Philippines which earlier beat Timor Leste 2-0.

The men's kumite team fielded Shahruddin Jamaludin, Loganeshaa Rao and L.Kunasilan, and won the repercharge 0-3 against Vietnam for a joint bronze with Brunei. Brunei defeated Laos 3-1 in the another repercharge stage.

Indonesia won the gold after beating the Philippines 3-0 in the final.

National coach, P.Arivalagan said although he was happy that karate managed to meet the four gold medals target set by the National Sports Council, he was rather dissappointed with the standard of judging.

"Like in today's women's team kumite final, our girls punches were not counted," he said.

Malaysia grabbed the karate gold through Shaharudin Jamaludin (Men's kumite below 75kg) R.Loganeshaa Rao (men's below 55kg kumite), G.Yamini (women's below 61kg kumite) and K.Teagarajan (men's below 84kg kumite).

The silver medals came from from Team Kata (Women's) and Team Kumite (Women's).

The bronze medallists are A.Nisha (women's kumite below 55kg), Thor Chee Yee (women's individual kata), Leong Tze Wai (men's individual kata), L.Kunasilan (men's kumite below 67kg), Jamalliah Jamaludin (women's kumite above 68kg), Shakila Sani (women's kumite below 68kg), Men's Team Kata and Men's Team Kumite.
