Emy advances to semis

EMY Latip became the second Malaysian silat exponent to advance to the final of the 25th Sea Games silat competition at the Lao Itecc Hall in Vientiane yesterday.

Emy just about booked her second final berth in four Sea Games appearances after scoring a narrow 3-2 decision over Indonesia's Anissa Pangestina in their women's Class C (55-60kg) semi-final clash.

"I was a little nervous in the third round as I tried to take the lead and attack more to make up for the points conceded in the previous round. I'm just glad to get to the final," said Sabah-born Emy, who was a silver medallist in the Class D (60-65kg) at the 2005 Manila Sea Games.

Ely joined Fauzi Khalid in the finals after the latter reached the men's Class F (70-75kg) final by beating 2005 gold medallist Marniel Dimla of the Philippines on Saturday in the semi-finals to guarantee Malaysia at least two silver medals.

Suhairi Chin, Faizal Abdullah and Hafiz Mahari advanced to the semi-finals of their respective categories as the exponents chase after their two-gold target.

The silat seni competition should have been held yesterday where two-time Suzy Sulaiman is due to compete in the tunggal puteri (women's solo) but a scheduling change saw the event postponed until Thursday despite the protestations of the Malaysian team management.
