Don't Regard Your Presence In Laos As A Holiday, Ahmad Shabery Warns Managers

VIENTIANE, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek warned managers who shirked their responsibilities and those who regarded their presence in Laos for the SEA Games as a holiday trip.

Referring to an incident whereby cyclists bound for Vientiane nearly missed their trip due to negligence by team officials, Ahmad Shabery said such situations would not arise if those responsible carried out their duties diligently.

"There should be no excuse for mistakes like missing the flight. I will wait for a report from the Chef-de-Mission (Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz) before further action.

"The officials brought here are responsible to manage their respective teams, they are not here for a holiday," he told reporters here on Wednesday.

He added that his ministry would introduce a mechanism to monitor the discipline of managers selected for such games.

Ahmad Shabery said the ministry had previously focused on the discipline of athletes but not officials.

He also questioned the dedication and patriotism of some officials who are here for the SEA Games for a holiday, leaving the athletes to on their own to handle the training and competition schedule.

The ministry would also study the process of selecting managers, practiced by the respective associations, because such selections did not benefit the country, he said.

Many associations in the country are known to practice a system whereby state presidents take turns to head their respective national teams for major events, he said.

"We (Ministry) want officials and managers who can work, not picked because it is their turn to travel overseas for a holiday," he said.
