A bronze in women’s team event

MALAYSIAN women paddlers, deprived of the services of national champion Ng Sock Khim, could only manage a bronze medal when the team event ended yesterday.

Team manager Soong Poh Wah said he was satisfied with the achievement of the women’s team, comprising Beh Lee Wei, Chiu So Jin and Fan Xiao Jun, “because that was the target set for the Games.”

“Despite the absence of Sock Khim, we were able to achieve our target. The men’s team, who played in Group B (against Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos) were not so lucky,” Poh Wah said yesterday.

Sock Khim, winner of the silver medal at the Korat SEA Games in 2007, had to miss the Laos Games due to a leg injury.

Malaysia were awarded the bronze medal as losing semi-finalists after going down 0-3 to Singapore, who fielded seasoned campaigners Feng Tian Wei, Sun Bei Bei and Zena Sim.

Now comes the individual events where five gold medals are up for grabs. — Bernama
