Paddlers Target One Silver, One Bronze At Laos Games

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Table Tennis Association of Malaysia (TTAM) are targetting one silver and one bronze medal at SEA Games in Laos in December.

TTAM executive director, Soong Poh Wah said their chance to win a gold medal had faded as their main opponent in the event was using the services of players from China.

"Based on this factor, TTAM is now targeting one silver and one bronze medal, which was our last achieivement in the 2007 edition of the Games in Korat, Thailand," he told Bernama, here Tuesday.

Soong said the target in Laos was achievable in the women's singles, women's doubles or men's doubles.

In Korat, Ng Sock Khim bagged Malaysia's silver in the women's singles while Muhd Shakirin Ibrahim/Chia Kiang Beng collected the bronze in men's doubles.

Soong said Malaysia had lined up all local players including two Malay players in the men's squad and that the national team was undergoing intensive training at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil under the supervision of a coach from China, Hao Peishu.

Soong said the three senior men in the squad to Laos were Muhd Shakirin Ibrahim, Chia Kian Beng, Khi Mao Shong and a new member from the back-up squad, Mohd Asraf Haikal.

Meanwhile, the senior women players are Beh Lee Wei, Ng Sock Khim and Chui Soo Jiin. Fan Xiao Jun is the back up palyer.

Muhd Shakirin, Kian Beng, Mao Shong, Lee Wei, Sock Khim and Soo Jiin were the senior players in the national squad who performed in Korat.

Soong said the national squad would take part in one more international championship in Lucknow, India from Nov 16 to 22 as part of their pre-SEA Games preparations.

He said TTAM was waiting for a reply from the National Sports Council, on training in China this October.
