SINGAPORE: Winning gold in the individual events in badminton will be an uphill task for Malaysia.

In the draw released yesterday, Chong Wei Feng, who is seeded fourth in the men’s singles, is tipped to meet Indonesian youngster Jonatan Christie in the quarter-finals.

The 28-year-old Wei Feng has already faced the 17-year-old Jonatan once, in the semi-finals of the team event, where he was stretched to three games before edging it.

The other singles shuttler - Mohd Arif Abdul Latif is expected to meet Thai third seed Boonsak Ponsana in the last eight.

“I think it’ll be good to play Jonatan again. I’ve never played him before but now I know how to deal with him,” said Wei Feng.

“I’m confident I can step up again and play even better.”

In the men’s doubles, Malaysia’s best hope is second seeds Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, who received a bye into the second round.

They meet the dangerous Gideon Markus Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya Sukomuljo of Indonesia in the second round.

The second Malaysian pair - Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang, also got a bye and meet Indonesian opponents - top seeds Ricky Karanda Suwardi-Angga Pratama, in the second round.

Women’s doubles defending champions Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei also have a tough challenge as they are likely to square off against Thailand’s Duanganong Aroonkesorn-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul in the semi-finals.

Malaysia’s prospects in the mixed doubles are not great either with top pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying meeting home favourites Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Vanessa Neo in the first round.

“I’ve had a look at the draws and it’s probably not the most favourable draws for us,” said Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost with a wry smile.

The individual events begin Friday.
