No joy for Malaysia’s foil team at SEA Games

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s hopes of bettering their SEA Games bronze medal in team foil were dashed after they crashed out in the quarter-finals at the OCBC Arena.

On Sunday, the team of Muhammad Aqil Anuar, Cheng Xing Han, Syed Adil Emir Putra and Nurul Affiq Ismail failed to muster a fight. They ended up losing 45-18 to Philippines’ Wilfred Curioso, Brennan Louie, Nathaniel Perez and Emerson Segui.

Host Singapore won the gold medal after beating The Philippines 45-40 in the final. The Philippines had earlier knocked out defending champions Thailand 45-33 in the semi-finals.

Singapore advanced to the final after beating Indonesia 45-21.

The losing semi-finalists - Indonesia and Thailand - picked up the bronze medal.

Malaysia had won the Foil team bronze medal at the Indonesia Games in 2011. Fencing was not contested in Myanmar two years ago.
