Malaysian U-23 squad suffer 0-1 loss despite playing against 10-man Indonesia


KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Under-23 squad lost 0-1 to the Indonesian Under-23 squad that played with 10-man for about 30 minutes, at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Indonesia, today.

In the match that was telecast live by Indonesian broadcast station RCTI, Wawan Febrianto scored the only goal of the match in the 34th minute from a corner kick.

Coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee made six changes in the second half in an effort to find the equaliser but poor finishing saw his boys troop off the field with their heads down.

The Indonesian squad were reduced to 10-man after Hansamu Yama Pranata was sacked by Cambodian referee Thong Chanketya for a second yellow card offence in the 61st minute.

Malaysia's best chance of the match came four minutes after Hansamu's sacking but Mohd Amirul Hisyam Awang Kechik's shot hit the bar.

The Under-23 squad preparing for the SEA Games in Singapore have been drawn in Group B which also include defending champion Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Brunei and Timor Leste.

Malaysia kick off their SEA Games campaign on May 30, against Timor Leste, before facing Vietnam on (June 2); Thailand (June 4); Brunei (June 8) and Laos (June 11).

Group B comprise host Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines.
