Gold From Archery, Athletics Saves The Day For Malaysian Contingent


NAYPYITAW, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- One gold medal each from archery and athletics saved the Malaysian contingent the blushes on the 14th day of the Myanmar SEA Games competition Tuesday.

The archery squad managed to defend the men's Recurve team gold through Khairul Anuar Mohamad, Atiq Bazil Bakri and Haziq Kamaruddin which gave archery their second gold medal of the games since Khairul Anuar had won the Recurve individual gold Monday.

In athletics, Mohd Jironi Riduan sprinted away with the gold medal in the men's 800m, earning athletics their second gold medal of the games after three days of action in track and field.

Malaysia also added two more silver medals from archery and shooting through the men's compound event through Mohd Kaharuddin Ashah, Muhd Zaki Mahazam and Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki while Siti Nur Masitah Badrin contributed her share from the women's 25m Sport Pistol individual.

After Tuesday's action, Malaysia remained in fifth spot with 27 gold, 25 silver and 46 bronze while leader Thailand continued to distance itself from the chasing pack with 64 gold, 55 silver, 54 bronze while Vietnam remained in second place with 48 gold, 43 silver and 52 bronze medals.

Indonesia moved ahead of host Myanmar after collecting 45 gold, 56 silver, 56 bronze while the host country dropped to fourth with 42 gold, 39 silver and 46 bronze.

Apart from the medals, there was also good news for football fans when coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee's boys defeated Vietnam 2-1 to make it into the semifinals and face Indonesia in their semifinal action.

Malaysia's medal hunt will continue Wednesday diving and taekwondo opening their competition arenas while athletics events will continue at their respective venues.
