Cycling Squad May Miss Road Training In Naypyitaw

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The national road cycling squad to the 27th SEA Games may not be on time for a full trial of the competition route when they arrive in Naypyitaw, Myanmar tomorrow night, said coach Aminuddin Sulaiman.

"The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (PKBM) had applied to the Myanmar government for visa and permission to hold familiarisation training there but was rejected.

"I think our racers can only ride short distances and follow with lead car.

"If we arrived four or five days earlier, our riders would have had the opportunity to adapt themselves to the route as the Thai and Indonesian teams are already there now," Aminuddin told Bernama here Wednesday.

The Myanmar SEA Games road cycling competition will start with the men and women's individual time trial this Sunday followed by the team time trial the next day.

The flag off for the events will be on Dec 17 (women - 128km) and Dec 18 (men - 163km).

PKBM is targeting two gold medals in the road races.

The last time the road cycling squad won a gold in the SEA Games in these events was by Suhardi Hassan at the 2005 Manila SEA Games.

The male squad selected for this SEA Games comprise Mohd Fauzan Ahmad Lufti, Mohamad Rauf Nur Misbah, Mohd Adiq Husainie Othman, Amir Mustafa Rusli, Mohd Shahrul Mat Amin, Loh Sea Keong, Muhamad Saufi Mat Senan, Mohd Zamri Salleh and Nik Mohd Azwan Zulkifli.

The women's squad is represented by Maziyaton Mohd Radzi, Nusyazwana Jamil, Grace Phang Cing Zhen, Nurul Suhada Zainal, Mariana Mohammad and Carolline George.

Maziyaton will also be partnering Junaidah Jus in the mountain bike (MTB) event while in the men's MTB, the challenge will be undertaken by Shahrin Amir, Mohd Zulhafiz Saifudin, Shahril Aizat Nazali and Mohd Harif Jamaludin. There will also be a BMX event which will be competed by Mohd Elmi Jumari and Mohd Arif Jamaludin.
