Travel advisory for Malaysians going to Myanmar Sea Games

The Malaysian Embassy in Myanmar will issue a travel advisory for Malaysians visiting Myanmar for the 27th Sea Games.

Ambassador Dr Ahmad Faisal Muhamad said the advisory was necessary as Myanmar was not a tourist-friendly nation.

"It will be uploaded on the embassy's Facebook site soon," he told a press conference yesterday after hosting a dinner for the Malaysian media delegation on a pre-Sea Games visit to Myanmar.

He said Malaysians planning to go to Myanmar must obtain a visa from the Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

"They must carry United States dollars as other currencies are not accepted here. The notes must in good condition. Not all commercial outlets will accept credit cards," he said.

On the Sea Games, Ahmad Faisal said the embassy to date had not been briefed by the Myanmar Sea Games Organising Committee on preparations for the event.

"Security will be boosted especially at the venues of the sports events by the Myanmar government during the Sea Games. Visitors must comply with all laws and respect the culture of the country," he said.

"Visitors must also only head for venues for the Sea Games, namely Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay and Ngwe Saung as not all places can be visited," he said.

A total 33 sports which offer 460 gold medals will be contested at the Games, to be held from December 11 to 22, 2013.
