BUKIT JALIL: Malaysia expects to bring back fewer gold medals from the 27th SEA Games to be held in Myanmar.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said this should however not be an excuse for national athletes to under-preform in their respective sports.

“We are only competing in a handful of games offered by the SEA Games, not because we don’t want to (participate in more) but because there are no athletes at SEA Games level to represent the nation for all the sports. There is no reason to sulk over a deficit in gold medals as we are currently three gold medals shy of a historic 1,000th,” said Khairy.

He was speaking Thursday at Nestle’s Milo Fuel For Champions campaign launch. Milo is the Malaysian contigent’s official drink and main sponsor for the upcoming 27th SEA Games.
Also present at the ceremony were Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) vice president Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, National Sports Council (NSC) director general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong and Nestle regional head Alois Hofbauer.

“The Milo Fuel For Champions campaign is more than just a one-time sponsorship; it aims to empower and energise young talents to strive for success in the early stages of their lives as well as to inspire parents to encourage their children to participate in sports from young,” said Khairy.

Meanwhile, Khairy said the decision to host the next SEA Games in 2017 is still being discussed.
“Right now we are in the midst of calculating the cost. Once everything is approved by the Cabinet, we will announce the decision,” he said.
