SEA GAMES: Malaysia's Table Tennis Hopes Rested On Two Male Players

JAKARTA, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- The withdrawal of two women players at the eleventh hour might affect Malaysia's medal haul target in table tennis at the SEA Games here.

With Beh Lee Wei and Ng Sock Khim pulling out of the tournament, Malaysia are now banking their hope on Mohd Shakirin Ibrahim and Chai Kian Beng in men's individual and team events.

Malaysia will not be competing in the women's singles and doubles while their hope of winning a medal in mixed doubles was dashed as the event was scrapped at the last minute.

Table Tennis Association of Malaysia executive director Soong Poh Wah said Lee Wei had to withdraw from the tournament as Sock Khim had yet to recover from her ligament injuries while the mixed doubles event was scrapped.

Lee Wei, who is ranked 65th in Asia and 112th in the world, bagged three bronze medals at the Laos SEA Games in 2009.

Malaysia won three bronze medals in Laos from the women's singles and doubles, and team events.
