SEA GAMES: Malaysia Bags Six Golds, Plus Bonus For Football

JAKARTA, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia bagged six golds on the 11th day of the 26th SEA Games to maintain its overall fourth position.

Four were contributed by the track cycling squad, one each through football and synchronised swimming.

The final medal tally by the national contingent was 58 gold, 48 silver and 77 bronze.

The host, Indonesia topped the 26th SEA Games with 170 gold, 146 silver and 134 bronze. Thailand, the previous champion came in second with 105 gold, 94 silver and 118 bronze followed by Vietnam (96, 90, 100).

Singapore was placed fifth after Malaysia with(42, 45, 73) followed by Philippines (36, 55, 77), Myanmar (16, 27, 34), Laos (9, 12, 36), Cambodia (4,11, 24), Timor Leste (1, 1, 6) and Brunei (0, 4, 7).

The final football match between Malaysia and Indonesia at Stadium Gelora Bung Karno was the highlight of the day.

In a no holds barred, dramatic to the finish play, the under-23 squad coached by Ong Kim Swee defeated Indonesia 5-4 on penalty kicks.

Gunawan Dwi Cahyo scored Indonesia's opening goal in the 4th minute, which took Mohd Asraruddin Putra Omar almost half an hour to equalise it for Malaysia.

In an edge of the seat cliff-hanger, the score was tied at the end of extra time which led the gold medal to be decided on penalty kicks.

Malaysia finally defended their championship won in Laos two years ago.

The nation was further presented with four gold medals in track cycling on the last day of competition today.

The gold were from the women's individual sprint, men's individual sprint, the women's team sprint and the men's omnium.

Melbourne-based national cyclist Fatehah Mustapa clinched the gold in the women individual sprint defeating Apryl Eppinger of the Philippines who took the silver with Santia Tri Kusuma of Indonesia settling for the bronze.

Fatehah, 22, paired with Ju Pha Som Net to win the women's team sprint gold, with the silver going to Thailand's Chanakan Sricha Um-Jutatip Maneephan while the host's Santia Tri Kusuma-Riska Agustin obtained the bronze.

In the men's category, Muhd Idros Md Yunos and Mohd Fattah Amri Zaid made a one two finish in the individual sprint to win gold and silver respectively with Satjakul Sianglam of Thailand taking the bronze.

Muhamad Hafiz Mohd also contributed to the gold tally after winning three of the five disciplines in the Omnium event to become overall champion.

On the last day of the synchronised swimming competition, Malaysia won the gold for the free combination team event.

The team comprised of Katrina Ann Abdul Hadi, Tan May Mei, Mandy Yeap, Shareen Hui, Tasha Jane Taher Ali, Emanuella Mah, Gan Zhen Yu, Zyanne Lee, Zylane Lee and Ling Yeo Pei put up a brilliant performance for the win.

The Games end tomorrow and offers the last 12 gold medals in paragliding in Bandung.

The closing ceremony will be held tomorrow night in Palembang.
