FAM President Confident Of Retaining Football Gold

KUANTAN, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President Sultan Ahmad Shah is confident the national football squad can retain the gold medal at the SEA Games 2011 in Indonesia.

He said the excellent performance put up by the Malaysian team in Group A proved that they were the favourite to emerge as the champion in the SEA Games this time.

"Malaysia will face Myanmar in the semi-finals and I am confident that we will win 2-0," he said when approached by reporters after opening the new hall of Sekolah Menengah Tengku Ampuan Afzan, here today.

Sultan Ahmad said the national Under-23 squad was most consistent and could beat any team in the semi-finals.

However, the Sultan hoped that the players would not be complacent following their success to top the Group A but should instead work hard to maintain their fitness level and current performance.

In the match yesterday, the solitary goal scored by Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim enabled Malaysia to top the Group A after beating Indonesia at the Stadium Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta.

The national Under-23 squad will meet the runner-up of Group B, Myanmar, while hosts Indonesia will meet the 2009 SEA Games runner-up, Vietnam.
