MGA set a modest silver target for SEA Games team events
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) is only targeting a modest silver medal target for both the men’s and women’s teams in the upcoming Jakarta SEA Games in November.
MGA vice president Low Teck San has admitted that Phillipines, Thailand and Indonesia will be the ones to beat and getting silver is just a realistic target.
“As of now we have yet to finalise our team for the Games.
“We will only announce the team at the end of September,” said Teck San after the venue launch of the 100Plus Malaysian Junior Open at the Saujana Golf & Country Club yesterday.
“For the men, so far we only have Gavin Kyle Green and Mohd Arie Irawan Ahmad Fauzi who are committed in participating in the event.”
“We are also aware that Kelly Tan has an hectic schedule in the US but we’re trying to persuade her to play in the Games as well because that will surely give our women’s team an edge,” said Teck San.
Kelly is the top national junior golfer in the country and is currently training in Florida where she competes in amateur tournaments there.
Meanwhile, 110 junior golfers from over 10 countries including Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, India and Taiwan will be participating in the Malaysian Junior Open which begins from Sept 12-15.
In the boys’ event, last year’s overall category runners-up Jeremiah Kim will lead the Malaysian challenge while Isza Fariza Ismail will be tasked with winning the girls’ title in the absence of Kelly who has opted out due to a hectic schedule.
However, Isza who finished third in the Under-16 category last year will find it tough to win as defending champion Sarah Ababa of the Philippines is also competing.
Sarah is bidding to become the first golfer in the tournament’s history to retain the overall crown.

Lee Wei hoping for a silver lining in her last SEA Games
PETALING JAYA: The SEA Games organisers have surprisingly dropped the team events from the table tennis competitions in Jakarta for the first time but it has not dampened seasoned campaigner Beh Lee Wei’s desire to achieve a sweet swansong.
The 28-year-old Lee Wei is shelving plans for retirement to make her seventh consecutive SEA Games appearance for the country and she is hoping to mark it with a silver lining come November.
With the team events scrapped, the Table Tennis Association of Malaysia (TTAM) are only looking at Lee Wei and Ng Sock Khim, the Korat SEA Games silver medallist in 2007, to shoulder the challenge in the women’s events.
Sock Khim, who missed the previous SEA Games in Laos, went for a back operation recently and is expected to start training next month.
The two male paddlers for the SEA Games are Mohd Shakirin Ibrahim and Chai Kian Beng.
Having won only the bronze medals so far, Lee Wei will be more than happy to have a silver lining in her seventh SEA Games campaign.
“I thought about plans to retire after the Commonwealth Games last year but there are no good players coming up to challenge me and Sock Khim at the moment. I still can play and the country still needs my services for another SEA Games.
“This sport has been my passion and I can’t just say no,” said Lee Wei, who won her 11th national crown last December after prevailing over Sock Khim in the final.
Her decision to go for another fling at the SEA Games is also prompted by a desire to pursue a dream to play in the Olympics.
“I want to try to qualify for the London Olympics through the Asian qualifiers next year,” added Lee Wei, who played a pivotal role in helping Malaysia to finish with three bronze medals in Laos two years ago.
The hunt for medals this time will be limited to the five individual events but Lee Wei felt the better chances lies in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Lee Wei is likely to partner Shakirin for the mixed doubles and she is hoping they can better their bronze medal showing from Laos.
Her hopes of a breakthrough outing is also boosted by news filtering out across the Causeway that world No. 2 Feng Tianwei is the only star in the Singaporean team while the others are second stringers.
This is due to the commitments of the Singapore seniors like Wang Yuegu and Li Jiawei, world No. 7 and No. 20, having to focus on improving their rankings in the world circuit ahead of the Olympics next year.
“Singapore, as usual, are the favourites when it comes to the SEA Games. They won six out of the seven gold medals at the last SEA Games.
“I heard that Singapore are not sending their first team but the ones coming, I’m sure, are not pushovers,” she added.
The last time Malaysia captured gold at the SEA Games was in Manila in 1991 through the women’s doubles pair of Phua Bee Sim-Chong Choi Thing.

Harun beri tumpuan Sukan SEA
“Saya masih belum bincang lagi.
Quzandria, Qabil buat kejutan

Bego’s back in the pool
KUALA LUMPUR: Swimmer Daniel Bego, who made the biggest splash for Malaysia with five gold medals in the Laos SEA Games two years ago, has returned to the pool after undergoing surgery to his shoulders three months ago.
And Daniel is playing down his chances of repeating the five-gold act at the Indonesia SEA Games in Palembang in November.
Taking it easy: Daniel Bego has just started training after undergoing two surgeries to correct bone spur problems on both his shoulders. Daniel underwent two operations in May to correct a long-standing bone spur problem.
A bone spur is a growth that forms on normal bone and can be extremely painful when it comes into contact with soft tissues or ligaments.
The long break from training has, however, made Daniel restless and the 22-year-old is glad to get back into the pool.
“I’m just playing around in the pool to see how the shoulders are coping with the strokes. It’s more likely that I will not be swimming in the SEA Games as I have not even started training seriously. But I don’t know what the plans are at the moment,” said Daniel, who broke four SEA Games records in Laos and was named the Best Athlete.
However, the Sarawak-born swimmer, who skipped the recent World Championships in Shanghai despite qualifying on merit for his pet freestyle and butterfly races, is bent on resurrecting his career by making a bid to qualify for the London Olympics next year.
“That (qualifying for the London Olympics) will be my main goal when I come back. That’s the reason why I went for the surgery in the first place,” said Daniel, who is also not taking part in the World University Games in Shenzhen later this month.
If Daniel is included in the SEA Games squad, swimming coach Paul Birmingham said he would probably be consigned to the relay events.
“There is no way he can get the gold medal with his current condition, especially as other swimmers have been clocking faster times in the individual events,” said Birmingham.
“Maybe, he can swim in the relays ... but still the main goal for him is the Olympics next year.”
In Laos, nine of the 15 gold medals won in aquatics came from the swimmers and all in record times. Daniel triumphed in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle; 100m and 200m butterfly.
Siow Yi Ting bagged three gold medals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley while Khoo Cai Lin defended her 400m freestyle title.

Yuvaraaj azam pamer larian emas di Sukan SEA

P. Yuvaraaj |

SEA Games football back to Jakarta

The Indonesian FA confirmed that the SEA Games football competition would not be held in Palembang as the venue will not be ready in time for the biennially held multi-sports extravaganza later this year.
“The stadium in will not be ready for the SEA Games so the football tournament will now be held entirely in Jakarta,” newly elected Deputy President, Farid Rahman, informed the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Council in Kuala Lumpur, Sunday.
As a result of the Jakabaring Stadium being ruled out, the AFF Under-23 Football Championship, which was to serve as a pre-SEA Games warm-up event, has been rescheduled. Originally slated for 16-26 July, the AFF is now trying to identify suitable replacement dates.
Some dates have been proposed, either in late September or mid-October, however there are issues with the availability of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium where the football competition will be held. According to Farid, the stadium will be undergoing renovation work and will only be ready in late October.
The football competition for the SEA Games is scheduled to start on 7 Nov 2011. The Indonesian FA have been asked to look into the various dates and availability of the stadium and subsequently advise the AFF.

Jadi apa salahnya gunakan khidmat anak tempatan,” katanya.

Door Still Open For Weightlifters To Earn SEA Games Ticket
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- The door is still open for national weightlifters to earn a ticket to the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, provided they can achieve good results at the National Weightlifting Circuit, to be held next month.
Malaysian Weightlifting Federation President Zafarul Akbar Kassim said even if weightlifters who achieved good results are not from the elite or back up squad, the federation would consider them for selection.
He said a number of weightlifters regarded as "underdogs" had caused upsets in the first circuit held in Bangi, Selangor.
"We see it as a positive development and hope by organising the second circuit, more weightlifters will qualify for the SEA Games," he told Bernama.
Zafarul said the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) had also given its consent to the federation to hold the second circuit before the Sept 25 dateline for sending names of athletes.
"Our selection will be purely based on merit," he said.
At the 2009 SEA Games in Laos, weightlifting contributed three silver and two bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Zafarul said the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) had commended the federation for successfully hosting the 37th Men's and 17th Women's World Junior Weightlifting Championships at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) from June 30 to July 7.
"IWF in its message congratulated the organiser for organising the best championships in the history of the event," he said.
Zafarul said although Malaysian weightlifters did not win any medals in the championships, there were many who had performed exceptionally well by surpassing their personal best.
"It was a good experience and exposure for the young weightlifters in the country and a tremendous opportunity to compete against world class weightlifters," he said.
