YOUTH and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek will urge the Cabinet Committee for Sports Development (CabComm) to emphasise the importance of electronic media, especially government electronic media to provide live coverage of major sporting events.
Ahmad Shabery, however, said he understood the financial predicament faced by the electronic media after the host country of the 25th SEA Games had requested US$1mil (RM3.5mil) as payment for broadcast rights.
The host country would only lose out by asking payment for broadcast rights because by giving equal rights to all the media, the host country stand to gain valuable free publicity, he said after visiting the National Sports Council’s secretariat at a hotel here yesterday. — Bernama
