Najib Hopes Malaysia Can Win SEA Games Football Gold

COPENHAGEN, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said here he hopes that the national football squad will play with determination in the 1Malaysia spirit to win the gold medal in the final Thursday at the ongoing SEA Games in Laos.

Victory would be most meaningful for the people of Malaysia who have waited 20 years for the gold medal in the sport at the biennial games, he said. Malaysia last won the gold in 1989.

"I will pray for the Malaysian squad to achieve victory, and I believe every Malaysian will also pray for our team to be victorious," he told Malaysian journalists after a dinner with Malaysians here last night.

Malaysia will meet Vietnam in the final in Vientiane this evening.

On the way to the final, Malaysia lost 1-3 to Vietnam, upset defending champion Thailand 2-1 and beat hosts Laos 3-1 in a semifinal.

Najib, who is accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, is in the Danish capital to attend the summit on climate change.
