VIENTIANE, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia are banking on Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim to deliver a weightlifting gold in the men's 56kg category at the 25th SEA Games that will officially get underway here on Dec 9.
Syed Fairus Syed Ali, the team manager of the national weightlifting contingent, said Amirul Hamizan held the potential to emulate the feat of Che Mohd Azrol Che Mat.
Che Mohd Azrul first won gold in the 105kg category at the Vietnam Games in 2003 and went on the defend it at the Manila Games in 2005.
However, at the last SEA Games in Korat, Thailand in 2005, the national squad only managed two bronze.
Syed Fairus said the men's squad were trained by a coach from China, Lee Xin Hui while the women's, by Zakaria Yusuf.
In other developments, Syed Fairus said he would be bringing up the matter of the unsuitability of the training venue to Malaysia's Chef-de-Mission, Datuk Dr Ramlan Abd Aziz.
He said the venue located on the pedestrian path between two buildings at the Pornsawan High School gymnasiun, near here, was not suitable because the cement floor was not in good condition and could not withstand the weights dropped on them.
"The floor is also full of holes which pose an injury risk to the competitors," he said.
Weightlifting, which offers 13 gold overall, begins on Wednesday and ends on Saturday.
