Malaysia's CDM Confident Hosts Can Provide Best Security Athletes


KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's chef-de-mission to the Laos SEA Games Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz said today he was confident that the hosts would provide the best security measures for athletes and officials during their stay in Vientiane this December.

Ramlan, who is also National Sports Institute (NSI) director-general, said he believed that proper security arrangements had been planned and put in place by the relevant authorities there so as to ensure the safety of thousands of athletes and officials from 10 countries.

"If there are any shortcomings in security matters, we will surely inform them immediately because we really stressed on security of our athletes and officials," he told Bernama Tuesday.

In the Laos SEA Games official website, www.laoseagames2009.com, security is under the purview of of the Public Security Ministry.

"Security is our top priority in facilitating the upcoming 25th SEA Games in December," said a statement in the website.

Asked whether any Malaysian security personnel would be accompanying the Malaysian contingent, Dr. Ramlan said the matter would be discussed at a meeting of the national contingent this Saturday.

Besides security, the meeting would also discuss matters such as medical facilities, logistics, and food and beverage preparation for the country's athletes and officials, he added.

Recently, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said Malaysia is expected to send a contingent of 370 athletes and 120 officials and has set a target of winning between 30 to 35 gold medals from 21 of the 25 sports on offer.

Malaysian athletes will feature in swimming, diving, archery, athletics, badminton, snooker & billiards, boxing, cycling, football, golf, judo, karate, silat, petanque, sepak takraw, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wushu.
