Diver Rossharisham to go for an op

PETALING JAYA: A five-gold medal target from diving at the SEA Games is under threat as experienced diver Rossharisham Roslan will probably not make the trip to Laos in December because of a recurrent knee injury.

The 26-year-old Rossharisham has been told to undergo surgery on the left knee and it could put him out of competitions for the rest of the year.

Out for now: Rossharisham may not be able to make the Laos trip as he has to undergo surgery on the left knee.

Rossharisham is the partner for Yeoh Ken Nee in the men’s 3m springboard synchronised event and his absence will cost Malaysia an almost certain gold medal in the Laos Games.

The duo have ruled the discipline since the 2005 Manila SEA Games and they were also the silver medallists in the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

Ken Nee, who also reached the world championship final with Rossharisham in Rome in July, said that his partner had been putting off plans to undergo surgery because of commitments to major competitions over the last few years.

“But the doctor has just told him that he cannot wait any longer or it could cause more serious damage,” said Ken Nee, who will also be defending his SEA Games gold medal in the 3m springboard individual event.

“He will go for the operation next month and will need up to three months to recover as the injury is on the same leg he uses to depress the springboard.”

With the latest development, coach Yang Zhuliang will try out 10m platform diver Bryan Nickson Lomas to partner Ken Nee for the springboard synchronised event. However, Rossharisham’s name will remain in the list of Malaysian divers for the Laos Games.

Although Bryan won the world junior title in springboard in Brazil in 2004, he has yet to compete in the synchronised event at the senior ranks.

“I have been told that we will try it out at the Asian Championships in Guangzhou next month,” said Ken Nee.

“We will be leaving on Sunday for a training stint in Kunming and we will get an indication on how well we can complement each other there.” - THE STAR
