Keen Ho says no to Sea Games

Ajitpal Singh

MOH Keen Ho has decided to choose work over defending his snooker singles gold medal at the Laos Sea Games in December.

Keen Ho, who left the national team late last year, is working at a snooker centre in Cheras.

The former Asian junior champion, explained that he could no longer dedicate his time to training due to work commitment.

His decision is a huge blow to the Malaysian contingent as Keen Ho, who once competed on the United Kingdom Professional Tour, was a favourite for the singles title in Laos.

Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF) secretary Melvin Chia said Keen Ho wants to concentrate on his job.

"We (MSBF) offered him a place in the Sea Games squad but he could not fulfil our terms," said Melvin yesterday.

"We need people who can commit fully to training. As for now, Keen Ho is out from the Sea Games."

Keen Ho was Malaysia's only gold medallist in the 2007 Korat games.

Thor Chuan Leong, who was axed from the national programme because of disciplinary problems last year, will join Lai Chee Wei in the snooker event.

"Chuan Leong has been training with the team for some time and we selected him on his current form on the local circuit. He also saw action in Korat. So, it's only natural for us to select him," added Melvin.

There were no surprises in the pool events as Benjamin Lee, Ibrahim Amir, Esther Kwan, and Suhana Dewi Sabtu were selected.

"Benjamin and Ibrahim won a bronze in the pool doubles in Korat. The pair are now ranked No 16 in the world and they should pose a stronger challenge in Laos," said Melvin.

Roslan Yurnalis and Chooi Yew Wah will compete in English billiards in Laos.

On the Sea Games' target, Melvin said the federation is treating it as an exposure trip.

A total of 10 gold medals will be on offer in Laos.
