Late Laos SEA Games registration looms

DUE to some mixup on the part of the 25th Southeast Asian Games organizers in Laos, some member-countries, including the Philippines and Malaysia, will have no choice but to submit their entries late.

The Philippine delegation’s chef de mission Gen. Mario Tanchanco said yesterday that the Philippine Olympic Committee obtained only last Friday a copy of a written inquiry from Laos, which asks member-countries to submit the number of athletes, who will see action in the biennial meet.

Tanchanco said the letter, together with the documents, should have reached the POC nine months before the meet. Tanchanco said the Olympic Council of Malaysia also complained last Thursday that they have yet to submit their own list because of the late transmittal of the letter from Laos.

Because of this, Tanchanco said the Philippines will just have to draw up a maximum number of athletes who will participate in the games.

“Nakuha ng POC ang documents only three days ago. Dahil mahirap magsubmit ng kulang, kailangang maximum na lang ang i-submit,” said Tanchanco, who added that they have only began to distribute the technical documents only now.

The POC said 300 Filipino athletes will be registered as participants to the games, which will be held from Dec. 9 to 18.

OCM Honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi, said in statement which was published in games’ official Web site that “although Laosoc claimed that the documents had been distributed, OCM has yet to receive the documents.” - Peter Atencio
