MSBF Considering Second-liners For Sea Games

Tuesday, January 06, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Snooker Billiards Federation (MSBF) is considering sending second-liners to the Laos SEA Games in December in the wake of Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's proposal to national sports bodies to do so.

MSBF secretary-general Melvin Chia said ultimately it would depend on how well they performed in the national circuit in the run up to the Games.

"There will be a lot of snooker tournaments from March onwards. We will choose the top eight ranked players from the local circuit by July. From the eight, four will be choosen for the SEA Games final squad through matches during training. The final names for the squad will then be submitted to the National Sports Council (NSC) by September," Chia told Bernama.

Currently, only two national snooker players, Lai Chee Wei and Chooi Yee Wah are left in MSBF's training programme, after three other players had either resigned or were sacked.

Chia added that Lai and Chooi were not automatic choices for the SEA Games final squad and that they had to compete in local tournaments like everyone else to earn a place.

Reigning SEA Games snooker singles gold medalist and former Asian Junior champion Moh Keen Ho, one of the most talented cue-artists in the country, resigned from the national training camp after deciding to go professional.

Another player, John Loh, also pulled-out of the national training squad citing the same reason while Thor Chuan Leong, another talented player, was given the boot by MSBF for indiscipline.

Moh, however, still has the chance to don national colours this December if he is in the top four after completion of the national circuit.
