SINGAPORE: Malaysia came into the Singapore SEA Games bent on winning the men’s rugby Sevens crown.
Instead, they look set to miss out on a top-two finish.
A crucial 15-5 loss to Singapore has put a big dent on Malaysia’s golden hopes as they are now third in the six-team standings, behind red-hot favourites Philippines and Singapore.
Malaysia had begun the first day of the round-robin competition on Saturday in style – beating Laos 40-0 and Thailand 29-7.
Then came the slip-up against Singapore.
Malaysia’s remaining fixtures are against Cambodia and the Philippines on Sunday.
The Malaysian women’s team are also staring at an early exit after a win and a loss on Saturday. They beat Laos 17-0 but fell 29-0 to Singapore.
They will take on favourites Thailand and the Philippines on Sunday.The Star Online
