SINGAPORE, June 6 (Bernama) - As expected, Malaysia won two gold medals at stake on the opening day of the diving event held at OCBC Aquatic Centre today.

National divers Cheong Jun Hoong won in the women's 3m platform while Ooi Tze Liang and Chew Yiwei won in the men's 10m synchronised platform.

However, the divers' success could not be replicated by the swimmers who failed to win any gold medal in the six events today.

Malaysia managed a bronze medal via Welson Sim in the men's 200m freestyle while the others could not match their rivals, especially those from Vietnam.

Worse still, women's 800m freestyle gold medal hope Khoo Cai Lin was forced to withdraw at the last minute due to tonsillitis.

Khoo said because of the tonsillitis, she could not breathe well during the qualifying round of the women's 400m medley in the morning.

Malaysia are fifth in the medal tally after winning three gold, seven silver and 11 bronze medals.

Singapore lead with 17-11-17 followed by Vietnam with 13-3-11 and Thailand with 10-14-14.

A total of 45 gold medals are at stake on the second day tomorrow.
