KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is banking on karate, swimming and athletics to deliver 30-35 gold medals at the Laos SEA games in December.
Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said Friday the 30-35 gold target was based on the last SEA Games and the athletes present performance.
"The target may be low but realistic as we lost many gold medals as many main sports will not be held. We expect most of the gold medals to come from karate, swimming and athletics," he told Bernama here.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek yesterday announced that Malaysia had targeted 30-35 gold medals.
Malaysia lost 32 gold medals when gymnastics, gymrama, tenpin bowling, squash, diving, equestrian, hockey, lawn bowling, polo, yachting and triathlon were dropped.
At Korat SEA Games, Thailand in 2007, most of Malaysia's gold medals were delivered by karate (8), swimming (7) and athletics (7).
Sieh said national divers Leong Mun Yee and Pandalela Rinong had qualified for the "Road to London 2012" elite programme in the quest for Malaysia's first olympic gold medal.
Leong and Pandalela made Malaysia proud after capturing the bronze medal at the World Swimming Championships in Rome a fortnight ago.
"Other athletes can also be included in the programme but not under the sports but on individual capacity," he said.
The `Road to London 2012' elite programme is focused on badminton, archery and cycling.
