Women's Hockey Squad Crush Singapore 7-0

SINGAPURA, June 6 (Bernama) -- The women's national hockey squad whitewashed hosts, Singapore 7-0 in an opening match of the SEA Games at Sengkuang Hockey Stadium, here, Saturday.

Defending champions, Malaysia lived up to their reputation in the one-sided match by opening the score via Juliani Mohamad Din through a penalty corner in the 14th minute.

Hanis Nadia Onn made it 2-0 with a field goal in the 25the minute.

Despite the vociferous cheers of the local supporters, Malaysia added the third goal through Rabiatul Adawiyah Mohamed one minute later.

Just before the first half ended, Fazilla Sylvester Silin squeezed in another goal in the 35th minute.

In the second half, Surizan Awang Noh slotted in the fifth goal in the 44th minute while Hanis Nadiah was on target to put in the sixth goal through a penalty corner in the 48th minute.

Juliani completed the rout with the seventh goal from a penalty corner in the 60th minute.

The national squad will meet Thailand tomorrow. The Thai women's squad thrashed Indonesia 9-0 in another preliminary round match.

Coach Mohammed Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim said the big win could have been bigger had it not been for the good defence put up by Singapore.

"I saw the Thailand match just now and they are good but I am confident we can beat them tomorrow," he said.

Meanwhile, the men's national hockey squad started their campaign on the right foot when they defeated Thailand 3-0.

Malaysia's goals were scored by Aminudin Mohd Zain in the third minute, and by Najmi Farizal Jazlan in the 24th minute and 43rd minute.

Defending champions Malaysia will meet hosts Singapore on Monday.
