Sea Games: The Athletics Main Arena In Palembang Is Still Not Ready

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- Although there are only six more days left before the opening ceremony of the 26th Sea Games in Indonesia, the athletics main arena in Palembang is still not equipped with lighting and finishing lines.

The athletics main arena is the venue for the opening and closing ceremony for the South-East Asia biennial games.

Project manager for the athletics fields, Tedjo as quoted by Jakarta Post said that all equipment would only be installed in the next two days.

"We had received the equipment from the manufacturer just a few days ago and believe that they would be installed in the next two days," he said after receiving a visit from Indonesian Vice-President, Boediono, who was inspecting the SEA Games preparations in Palembang, South Sumatera.

Meanwhile, SEA Games organising committee member on athletics, Zulfaini M. Roffi, as reported in tempointeraktif.com, said the athletics competitions would begin on Nov 14, and assured that all equipment would be installed and the opening ceremony games would run smoothly.

Malaysia will be sending a 872-strong contingent, including the athletes and officials, to compete in 38 of the 43 sporting events.

Malaysian athletes would be competing in all sports except wrestling, traditional boat race, soft tennis and vovinam (a self-defence art from Vietnam).

A few sports will be held in Palembang such as climbing, shooting, athletics, petanque, roller skates, beach volley ball, softball at Jakabaring Sports Complex and Aquatics at Lumban Tirta Aquatics Centre.

Chef-de-mission Datuk Naim Mohamad will lead the charge of national athletes at Jakarta, while Chef-de-mission Datuk Syed Mustaffa Syed Ali will lead the athletes in Palembang.
