Muhamad Hafiz Wins Cycling's Fourth Gold Medal

JAKARTA, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- National cyclist Muhamad Hafiz Mohd Sufian gave the Malaysian cycling team its fourth gold medal in the 26th SEA Games after emerging overall champion of the Omnium event at the Rawamangun Velodrome here today.

The rider from Selangor took the overall gold after winning three of the five disciplines contested in the Omnium event, namely the Flying Lap, Elimination and Scratch while finishing third and fourth in the 4000m pursuit and Points race.

Another national cyclist, Ahmad Fakhrullah Alias, took the bronze behind Indonesia's Fatahillah Abdullah.

"I wish to dedicate this win to my wife who is expecting our first child. The doctors have given the due date as January," he told reporters after the race.

Hafiz, making his maiden appearance in the Omnium event said, he did not expect to win the gold medal on his very first attempt, especially after having contested in the Sprint, 1km and Keirin events in the past.

"My aim and dream was to win a gold medal in the SEA Games and when I won two of the four events, my confidence grew," said the rider who had gained some experience after competing in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.
