MAAU Needs To Explain Men's Relay Quartet Issue - Ahmad Shabery

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Amateur Athletics Association (MAAU) needs to provide an explanation on the issue of the Malaysian men's 4x400m quartet missing out on the SEA Games medal presentation in Palembang, Indonesia, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Extending his congratulations to the quartet for winning the gold medal in the event, he said he was saddened that the quartet had to forego the medal presentation ceremony.

"I do not know what transpired but I regret such a thing happened. However, we must give the MAAU the benefit of the doubt and let them clarify the matter and how to ensure there is no recurrence," he told reporters after attending the National Youth Consultative Council meeting here.

The MAAU has come under flak for bringing home the Malaysian 4x400m men's quartet of S.Kannathasan, P.Vuvaraj, Schzuan Ahmad Rosely and Mohd Yunus La Salleh, who were surprise winners of the gold in the event on Monday, even before the medal presentation ceremony, which was scheduled for the next day.

Ahmad Shabery also denied that the incident was due to an internal crisis in the MAAU.

On another matter, Ahmad Shabery advised Malaysia's football players who will be up against hosts Indonesia in the final group match in the SEA Games football competition tomorrow not to pick up any red cards.

He said Malaysia were on track to reach the final and that red cards would jeopardise the team's chances.
