Khe Wei–Vivian expecting a tougher time in their return to Indonesia

JAKARTA: Just a month ago, doubles shuttlers Woon Khe Wei and Vivian Hoo had a ball in Indonesia. Now the girls are back to have more fun.

Yesterday, the 22-year-old Khe Wei and the rest of the Malaysian badminton team arrived in Jakarta for the competition which begins on Saturday at Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan.

Khe Wei-Vivian had a memorable outing when they nailed their first international title, the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold in East Kalimantan.

Ready for action: Woon Khe Wei (left) and Vivien Hoo won the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold women’s doubles title in East Kalimantan last month.

They had scalped two Chinese pairs - Zhong Qianxin-Bao Yixin and Cheng Su-Pan Pan - en route to the prized title.

The 22-year-old Khe Wei said the atmosphere here would be totally different as the Jakarta crowds were more hostile. But she is, nevertheless, ready to enjoy herself.

“In Kalimantan, the crowd was rooting for us against the Chinese in the final. This time, they will be out to intimidate us,” said Khe Wei.

”Indonesia are fielding a very strong team as they want to regain their status as the best women’s side in the region.”

At Laos 2009, the Malaysians outdid themselves when Khe Wei-Ng Hui Lin delivered a crucial point to beat Indonesia in the women’s team event. Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty also went on to win the women’s doubles title.

”The seniors are around this time and it will not be easy defending the team gold.
“I’m one of the most experienced in the side as the others are relatively new,” said Khe Wei.
“Vivian and I are quite confident with our game after winning the Indonesia GP Gold. Hopefully, my second SEA Games will be as successful as the first.”

But against a strong opposition, including Indonesia’s Greysia Polii-Meiliana Jauhari, Anneke Feinya Agustin-Nitya Krishina Maheswari and Singapore’s Shinta Mulia Sari-Yao Lei, the Malaysian pair will really need to push themselves to win a medal.
