Seven national cyclists to go on ‘spying’ trip to Bandung

PETALING JAYA: Seven national cyclists will go on a reconnaissance trip to Bandung, Indonesia, today in preparation for the Indonesia SEA Games in November.

The seven are national champion Mohd Shahrul Mat Amin and Mohd Saufi Mat Senan (Terengganu Pro-Asia), Mohd Adiq Husainie Othman and Amir Mustafa Rusli (Drapac), Ng Yong Li (Le Tua), Mohd Rauf Nur Misbah and Akmal Amrun.

Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president Abu Samah Abdul Wahab said they would scout several sections of Bandung, where the road race is expected to be held.

“The team will be there for four days before returning on Wednesday,” he said yesterday.
“Although the SEA Games route has not been finalised yet, we have a strong feeling that they (the organisers) will use Bandung as the venue for road cycling.”

The recon trip also marks the beginning of serious preparation for the Games as the riders will set up a training base in Chiangmai, Thailand, in August. They will train there for a month before competing in several races in Australia in September.

For the record, Malaysia last bagged the SEA Games road cycling gold medal through Suhardi Hassan in 2005 in Manila.
