Cyclists end campaign without a gold medal

THE Malaysian cycling squad ended their campaign with a silver and a bronze in the road races at Dane Soung in the Saythany District yesterday.

Nor Azian Alias settled for the silver in the women’s 116km race after failing to chase down Jutatip Maneephan of Thailand in the final sprint to the finish.

The Thai grabbed the gold in 36:33.00. Vietnam’s Phan Thuy Trang finished third.

In the men’s 160km race, Zamri Salleh was the only Malaysian who managed to stay among the group of cyclists who broke away from the field with 10km remaining and he eventually finished third.

The two medals from the road races offered little consolation, considering that it was the first time since the 1981 Manila Games that Malaysia did not win a cycling gold.

At the last Games in Korat, Malaysia won four gold medals, all coming from the track events.
