Big Apple stint ahead of SEA Games charge

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian women’s beach volleyball players are undergoing a two-week training stint in New York as they gear up for a medal onslaught in the Laos SEA Games in December.

The stint is conducted by Eric LeCain, a former professional beach volleyball player in the United States.

The players in camp together with coach Lim Poh Hong since last week are Beh Shun Thing, Luk Teck Hua, Jessie Lee Jay See, Chia Chou Hwa and Iswari Manokharan.

“Training is held between 9am and 5pm, there is a two-hour break in between the sessions,” said Poh Hong.

“The first week’s training programme emphasised on plyometric, speed and endurance and individual techniques.”

She added that the stint would also serve as a good tune-up for the World Tour leg in Phuket from Nov 4-8.

Back-up player Tan Chiew Lee is not with the team as she is preparing for her final exams at the Universiti Putra Malaysia. But she will be back to compete in Phuket.

“The competitions in Phuket will give us the opportunities to study our rivals from Thailand and Indonesia, who were the gold and silver medallists in the last SEA Games in Korat,” said Poh Hong.

“We also have to watch out for Indonesia and Vietnam, who have showed much improvement during the Asian circuits in April.

“Shun Thing and Teck Hua will be the best bet for medals for us in Laos after obtaining the bronze in Korat. I hope they will be able to do better in Vientiane.

“They came close to making the final in Korat and I hope they will not miss it this time.”
