Fong Ying aims to live up to her status as world champion

PETALING JAYA: Squash player Nicol David is not the only world champion in her sport representing Malaysia in the World Games in Kaohsiung.

Like Nicol, wushu exponent Chai Fong Ying has also swept all the major titles at stake and will be looking to win a World Games gold medal before the week is over.

Fong Ying is one of the four Malaysian exponents in action in the Games competitions, which begin tomorrow.

As a two-time world championship gold medallist, there is much hope on Fong Ying to come out tops.

She will compete in the women’s combined taijijian (taiji sword) and taijiquan. In the men’s category, Malaysia will be represented by Lee Yang.

World championship silver medallist Diana Bong Siong Lin will carry the challenge in the women’s combined nanquan (southern style boxing) and nandao (sword) while the Malaysian representative in the men’s division is former Asian junior champion Ho Mun Hua.

The four exponents left for Kaohsiung yesterday.

Fong Ying is honoured to be nominated to be the Malaysian representative for the World Games taijiquan and taijijian competitions.

“I will give my best performances and hope they are good enough to carry me to the top,” said the 23-year-old from Batu Berendam in Malacca.

“This is my first World Games and it is the first time wushu is included. It is important for me to carry my form through two days of competition as the medals will be determined from combined scores.”

Besides the world title, Fong Ying has taken gold at the Asian Games, Asian Championships and SEA Games.

Fong Ying is expected to renew her rivalry with Japan’s Miyaoka Ai in the World Games competitions.
