Mohd Zabidi Clinches 100-metre Dash Title

MELAKA, June 21 (Bernama) -- National sprinter Mohd Zabidi Ghazali won the 100-metre dash in 10.84 seconds on the final day of the 45th Melaka Open Athletic Championship at the Hang Jebat Stadium here today.

Mohd Zabidi, who clinched the 100-metre dash title in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Terengganu recently, finished ahead of national junior sprinter Mohd Idris Zakaria, who clocked 10.90 seconds followed by Mohd Latif Nyat (11.08 seconds), third.

Mohd Idris, 21, from Terengganu emerged the winner of the 200-metre dash yesterday when he registered 21.90 seconds to break the record by 0.60 seconds.

Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) deputy president Karim Ibrahim described Idris as the most promising athlete at the championship.

"He is a potential winner in the 400-meter race. However, the event is not included in the championship," he told reporters here today.

No national records were erased today.

However, Aseinny Asik of MAAU clipped the championship's record in women's shot put by hurling her personal best to a distance of 13.44 metres against the previous mark of 9.85 metres.

Another record came from Tan Song Hwa of Pahang in women's hammer throw when she registered a distance of 52.93 metres.

However, it was below her personal best when she registered the shot put national record with a throw of 55.67 metres last year. Tan's effort then had earned her a place in the Laos SEA Games in December.

A total of 478 athletes from 30 contingents including two countries - Saudi Arabia and Oman - are vying for honours in the championship.
