Eswaran punching his way to the top

PETALING JAYA: Up-and-coming boxer Eswaran Murali is set to go places.

The Malaysian Amateur Boxing Federation (MABF) have plans for the 21-year-old Air Force commando, who is fast making a name for himself after a surprise bronze medal-winning effort in the A.K. Mishra Memorial championships in Chandigarh, India, last month.

The MABF secretary-general, Maulud Othman, said yesterday that Eswaran, who competes in the 64kg division, moved up to the national ranks after picking up the Sukma (Malaysia Games) gold medal in Terengganu last year.

The MABF have selected Eswaran together with two other boxers to compete in the King’s Cup tournament in Bangkok next month.

“Eswaran has showed good progress and we hope to expose him in international tournaments before he moves on to the bigger stage such as the Laos SEA Games in December and the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year,” said Maulud.

The other two Malaysian boxers for the King’s Cup from April 3-10 are Mohd Ali Abdul Karim (64kg) and Paulus Paunandes (60kg).
