Only one way to semis for Malaysian women paddlers

SINGAPORE: Beat Indonesia!

That’s what the Malaysian women have to do if they hope to salvage a medal in the team event on Sunday.

Malaysia faltered in their opening Group B match, suffering a 3-0 whitewash to Thailand at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

Singles silver medallist Ng Sock Khim was outplayed 11-9, 11-7, 11-4 by Tamolwan Khetkhuan while Lee Rou You went down 11-5, 12-10, 11-3 to veteran Nanthana Komwong. Ho Ying too was no match for Orawan Paranang, who won 11-7, 11-5, 11-9.

A win against Indonesia will see them finish second to Thailand and qualify for the semi-finals. Thailand, who also beat Indonesia 3-0 on Saturday, lead the group. The women’s team final will also be played on Sunday.

In men’s competition, Malaysia got off to a good start by beating Myanmar 3-0 in Group B.

Leong Chee Feng brushed aside Lat Thet Ko Ko 11-6, 11-4, 11-8 before Muhd Shakirin Ibrahim came back from a set down to beat Tun Myo Min 5-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-9.

Muhammad Ashraf Haiqal completed the rout with a 12-10, 11-5, 11-4 win over Naing Htoo Htoo.
