KUALA LUMPUR: Independent men’s
singles shuttler Mohd Arif Abdul Latif failed to give himself a boost
ahead of the SEA Games in Singapore.
He suffered a shock 21-17, 21-11 defeat to Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia in the first round of the Indonesian Open qualifying tournament in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The loss to a younger player does not bode well of his preparation for the SEA Games. He may cross path with Ihsan during the men’s team competition from June 11-13.
Former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli salvaged some pride for Malaysia when he marched into the first round of the Superseries event after winning both his matches in qualifying.
He defeated Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo of Indonesia 21-17, 21-13 and came
through the second round by the skin of his teeth, edging Hong Kong’s
Angus Ng Ka Long 21-23, 21-11, 22-20.
