NSC Officer Dies While On Duty

PALEMBANG, Nov 10 (Bernama) - The Malaysian contingent to Indonesia SEA Games here is shocked by the death of a National Sports Council (NSC) officer Wednesday.

Youth and sports officer Harun Osman died while waiting to welcome Malaysian athletes at Sultan Mahmud Badarudin II Airport here.

He was talking with some friends while waiting for the athletes to arrive when he suddenly fainted at about 5pm local time (6pm Malaysian time).

The SEA Games medical team which was close at hand rushed to Harun's aid.

Malaysian contingent head in Palembang Datuk Syed Mustafa Syed Ali said Harun was rushed to RS Myria Hospital and died at about 6pm local time.

"Harun who complained of chest pain in the morning is believed to have suffered a heart attack," he added.

Harun's remain will be brought back to Kuala Lumpur after a post-mortem.

In Jakarta, NSC director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong said it was the first death involving a member of the Malaysian contingent secretariat in the games.

"The Malaysian contingent in Palembang and Jakarta regrets his death," he said when contacted by Bernama.

Zolkples said NSC officials in Jakarta told him that Harun appeared healthy before travelling to Indonesia.

"He complained of chest pain in the morning but insisted on welcoming athletes arriving to Palembang this evening," he added.
